From Doctor’s Desk – Excessive Mobile Use and Screen Time: Protecting Childhood

Smartphones, tablets and television have become part of everyday family life. Technology can support learning and communication, but excessive screen time may affect a child’s sleep, physical activity, attention and social development.

Young children especially need time to play, talk, explore and interact with family members. Spending too much time on screens can reduce opportunities for these important experiences. Late-night screen use may also interfere with healthy sleep routines.

Parents can help by creating simple and consistent rules. Keep mealtimes and bedrooms screen-free where possible. Encourage outdoor play, reading, drawing, hobbies and family conversations. Avoid using mobile phones as the only way to calm or entertain a child.

Parents should also model healthy behaviour. Children learn from what they see, so reducing unnecessary phone use by adults can make family rules easier to follow.

Screen use should be age-appropriate and balanced with sleep, physical activity, schoolwork and family interaction.

If a child shows persistent problems with sleep, behaviour, attention, communication or social interaction, speak with a healthcare professional.

At Sevayan Hospital, we believe healthy childhood needs more than a screen—it needs sleep, play, conversation and care.

Put the phone down. Pick up a conversation, a book or a ball. Childhood needs real-world connections.
